Combating Powdery Mildew: Science, Prevention, and Treatment Strategies

Effectively manage powdery mildew by understanding its specific life cycle and preferred conditions, allowing you to apply science-backed treatments that protect your yields.

Short Summary

  • Understand that powdery mildew requires specific conditions (high humidity, warm nights, dry days) and cannot survive free-flowing water.
  • Implement preventative strategies like maximizing air circulation and selecting resistant varieties before outbreak occurs.
  • Use contact fungicides like potassium bicarbonate or protective agents like neem oil for active treatment, tailored to infestation severity. This overview, led by plant pathology expert Shannie, shifts the focus from fearing this common fungus to actively managing its behavior through proactive and reactive strategies.

I'm so glad to hear about the method of blasting off the mildew with water early in the day! So many people act like if you let water touch the leaves at all its over, as if rain just doesn't exist

OMG. I'd always avoided directly watering the leaves because I thought that would INCREASE powdery mildew. This advice is a game changer. Thanks, Shannie!

Omg I needed this a few days ago. I was like how did my plants get powdery mildew from baking in the sun? I thought it happened from too much moisture on the leaves

I always compost our PM leaves. Like she basically said in the video, PM is already pretty much all around us, so trying to remove a pile of infected leaves off site isn't going to help out much. However, there are bacteria that occur in compost piles that will actually consume various pathological fungi like pm and blight. Including these diseases leaves in the pile help increase these natural defenders, which then get applied to our garden space when I apply our compost and brew compost teas. Sure, we still get PM, but it's in a very manageable state, thanks to the healthy soil biology we create via composting.

I just went out and did the water spray on my squash plants. Then a bunch of squash bugs came out of the plants and started crawling up the side of the garage next to the plants. So I was able to easily spray them. So happy I saw this video! Had no idea there were so many bugs in the plants.

I live in a dry place so powdery mildew is common, it is truly the worst during summer droughts, when it rains regularly it miraculously disappears.
