Description

Google just fundamentally changed how they work on Android. All of the development is being moved out of the open source projects. This has some very interesting implications... Those older phones operating systems were in no way crappy. It took developers in that era a significant of time and effort to squeeze every bit of hardware they could use to make the experience as good as possible, something devs don't even care about doing now. Yeah early android and IOS provided a much better user experience but that doesn't mean the older OS were crappy.

Theo, you are mixing up your timelines and the Open handset alliance. Android was always an OS from the beginning it was a digital camera OS. They pivoted to cell phones in 2005 and google bought them then. You are right google did panic but they were already working on a mobile phone os just not that aggressively. That's how they managed to pull a competing product to the iphone out in a year.

"These numbers are hard to find. Luckily I trust a hallucinating magic box!" - proceeds to publish entirely incorrect history segment in front of a 5 minute article.

on the exclusivity of phones, this seems to have only been a thing in the US, not over here on the other side of the pond, we already had SIM cards and SIM swapping was a thing for us since the 90s

The provider exclusive phone thing was a US licensing issue, not actually a phone issue, same phones were available unlocked in Europe
