Typical way of preparing surstromming (from my family) is by opening it a few meters away outside the house and in a bucket of water so that squirting is not a problem. if it's all liquid then you do not eat it, it is bad if it's all liquid. The can you got was bad, if you can don't get any when they are puffed like that, it's usually a sign that the fish has fully rotted away.
It's not supposed to be a puré like it was in the video. It has fermented too much cause it wasn't kept refrigerated like it should. Greetings from Finland where you also can get surstromming. But it never expires in the sense that it would become poisonous
If the fish is left too long in the can it essentially putrifies and turns into liquid, those are the cans most youtubers open.
It looks like a spraypainted landmine.
The product was destroyed during shipping. Surströmming needs to be refrigerated due to the active fermentation process inside the can. If it gets too warm for too long the fish will digest itself.
"I smell a little tuna in there" "That's the fish..."
If it's expired: the fermentation is done, and the smell is likely weakened.
1:01 locking jokes behind a paywall is crazy
As a Swede I can confirm this Surströmming is in fact ruined.
I think charlie having covid 4 times has messed up his sense of smell
