The problem is that modern people have no idea what marriage actually means. It genuinely is a bad plan to "marry" someone who thinks "love is love" and that as soon as those feelings subsidide, there's nothing wrong with splitting up and make believe it's actually better for their children.
Family courts and divorce laws killed marriage and family. Anyone who says otherwise has not met their spouse in a family court. She is not the person you married. I have close personal friends who by doing what was good and right lost all access to their children and will either cycle through jail periodically for not being able to pay the full amount of alimony or are a layoff notice away from jail. One close friend was labeled one of the top 10 deadbeat dads in the county after the courts ruled his child support payments were gifts to his ex rather than child support because they were not made through the courts but were instead checks made out to his ex. All marriages have a rocky period. It is getting through that period that strengthens the marriage. However, our legal system rewards women who do a smash and grab at those points.
They have not been doing it this way forever, current marriage laws only trace back to 1913
