Hi Lee, This has been explained in the comics, In the "Drowning Logan" story arc from Wolverine (vol. 5) #5 (June 2013) ,Wolverine is trapped underwater for an extended period, which puts immense strain on his healing factor and overall well-being. .Although Wolverine's healing factor is powerful enough to prevent him from dying, the prolonged submersion inflicts lasting damage.
