I do really respect that they didn't just make Val-Yor secretly evil. The Locrix genuinely do seem to be the threat he claims they are, and he really is trying to stop them. But the show makes it clear his heroics in that aspect don’t excuse or soften his racism, and although he goes through a modicum of character growth, he doesn’t do a complete 180 and let go of his prejudice entirely. And the Titans call him out on still being bigoted. It’s a level of nuance you rarely see in kids shows to have someone be a good person in some aspects and a piece of shit in others, and to show that one experience won’t undo a lifetime of bias.

The fact that he called Starfire a Tamaranian only when he decided she’d “earned” his respect but INSTANTLY when back to using a slur the moment the team called him out on his prejudice

You just know the writers started with "moo-ya" and worked backwards.

I wish more writers had the balls to come up with something as brilliant as "Moo-yah!"

We all hate him, Nikhil. We all do.

They decided to do something really different. This is the only racist good guy I can think of in modern media. He doesn’t even learn a lesson at the end. It’s a much scarier and more realistic than the usual depiction of racism.

As a kid, I took “I’m part robot” as he’s a black amputee, which makes discrimination against him worse.

I do want to say, Starfire being nice to Val Yor isn't them pushing the "be nice to the haters". That is just Starfire. She will be nice to even the worst of people because she believes that to be the best version of her. The lesson is more, don't let some person's hate change who you are.
