Self Defense Doesn't Exist Anymore
Legal Minefield: Why Shooting Through a Door Can Lead to Manslaughter Charges
Decipher the critical legal distinctions that turn lawful self-defense into criminal liability when responding aggressively to home break-ins. Understand why prosecutors target the method of defense as much as the underlying threat.
Short Summary
- Dayton Napton faces manslaughter charges after fatally shooting an intruder and then firing at others fleeing his Michigan garage.
- Key liability came from firing shots through a windowless door and pursuing fleeing suspects, actions viewed as exceeding force.
- The discussion contrasts the right to defend property against the strict firearms safety rule regarding target identification.
This orientation covers the specific facts of the case, focusing on how shooting technique—specifically firing through barriers—can introduce risks of criminal negligence even when an initial threat is clear.

The whole situation could have been avoided if the “teenagers” weren’t breaking into someone’s house.
Lol "Teens"
You should have the right to defend your home and property from thugs.
You automatically made the choice to surrender your life when you choose to break into someone’s property.
Whether he is found guilty or not does not matter to the state. Their goal is already achieved through indictment. Make the common citzen afraid.
Apparently according to the mom, you have to ask questions like: “are you here to rob or kill me? Please take your shoes off. I just cleaned the floors.”
If you don't want to get shot, dont break into peoples private property
Yeah. You break into my garage. You made your choice. And forced me to make one.
There was a video a while back where an "elderly" woman shot some punk that was breaking into her house to rob her, and a family member of the punk was interviewed. The family member(sister?) said "how he gunna get his?" as if stealing was part of society and should be allowed. These people are pro-crime.
It's a shame when criminals have more rights than the victims.
