Reviewers Analyze Disney's Culturally Rich, Trope-Bending Animated Feature

Discover why this film excels at deep character development and rich cultural immersion while simultaneously engaging critically with common animated tropes about representation and transformation sequences.

Short Summary

  • Voice acting talent (Keith David, Jennifer Lewis) received widespread acclaim for their iconic performances.
  • The New Orleans setting successfully used music, food (Gumbo, Beignets), and local culture to create an immersive environment.
  • Reviewers analyzed the film’s adherence to, or subversion of, standard Disney romantic relationship arcs.
  • Initial skepticism about watching another animated feature transformation into high praise for its unexpected depth.

This review session explores The Princess and the Frog (2009), noting how the setting transports the audience to New Orleans, celebrating its jazz and culinary scene. The discussion emphasizes the nuanced character arcs—especially Prince Naveen learning responsibility—while also acknowledging the problematic trend where Black characters are frequently denied remaining in their human form throughout the narrative.

Lottie is a great friend. She’s spoiled but she’s not rotten. She had that blue dress made for Tiana. She probably offered Tiana money but Tiana didn’t want to take handouts. Her dad said that she has to work hard and that’s what she did.

Fun fact: This is Walt Disney Animation Studios first musical film in which all of the voice actors do both the speaking and singing parts since Beauty and the Beast (1991).

Man... As a black southern woman from Louisiana, this movie was sooo important when it came out. Took my daughter every week to see it. She's now in culinary school in Paris. So proud of her.

As a Louisiana girl, I love this movie this was such a moment when it came out. You guys know the voice of Tiana from Dreamgirls and Tiana is based on Leah Chase was the first black woman to own her own restaurant in NOLA. She’s passed now but the restaurant is still there. And Keith Davids Dr Facilier is a top 5 Disney villain song for me

I love how the alligator character's name is Louis as a way to pay and show homage to Louis Armstrong who is from New Orleans and was one of the pioneers for creating Jazz music

Lottie was most definitely not a brat in my opinion. She was just spoiled. She didn't throw a tantrum when Naveen wanted Tiana and was all for it and supported Tiana in her endeavors. I think they wrote her character as spoiled but not in a hateful way Also I believe this was Disney's last hand drawn movie

Apparently Naveen actually IS South Asian. There's a theory that his home country has some European history, probably colonization, hence his accent. LOVE the culture in this movie!!
