Description

Jaby and Michael watch the intense and emotionally charged Tyler Perry film, A Jazzman’s Blues (2022), centred around a young Black man who falls in love with a woman he is forbidden to be with. Spanning decades of secrets, lies, and betrayal in the Deep South, the film explores themes of love, prejudice, sacrifice, and truth as their romance is tested by family, society, and time. Directed by Tyler Perry (Diary of a Mad Black Woman, For Colored Girls, Madea’s Family Reunion), the film stars Joshua Boone (Premature, Wheels, Law & Order: SVU), Solea Pfeiffer (Hamilton, Scandal, Curb Your Enthusiasm), Amirah Vann (Underground, How to Get Away with Murder, Star Trek: Picard), Austin Scott (Pose, Sistas, A Jazzman’s Blues), Brent Antonello (Hit the Floor, Dynasty, A Jazzman’s Blues), Brad Benedict (The Oval, Too Close to Home, A Jazzman’s Blues), and Ryan Eggold (New Amsterdam, The Blacklist, BlacKkKlansman). Fun Fact: This movie was written BEFORE Tyler even got famous. Even before Madea was created. It was supposed to be a stage play and is even mentioned in the program book for Tyler's first play I Know I've Been Changed. But he held the script back in hopes of turning it into a movie. It was even supposed to be filmed right after The Family That Preys but plans fell through Tyler said he wanted to play the role of Bayou and have Will Smith as Willie Earl and Diana Ross as Hattie Mae

It was Hattie Mae who brought the letters at the beginning. It's also ironic that Hattie Mae helped bring her grandson Johnathan into the world only to see him be brought up as a racist. Those letters set his ass straight though!

I agree with Jaby and Mike, this is Tyler Perry’s best movie yet. And I love the song, Paper Airplanes, it’s so fitting.

10:10 There were still many Black people who were illiterate at this time. My grandfather built a home, bought a home, ran a small business and cared for 8 children and 2 grandchildren and all the while couldn’t read. I never knew until he was literally on his death bed. Always thought he asked me to read the articles in the paper because he couldn’t see them. I wish I had known, I could have taught him.

Bless you guys’ sweet, innocent hearts 😭😭 I’m a darker skinned black woman and I grew up on Jim Crow era and slavery movies so I immediately knew why Willie Earl and the dad ( he IS Bayou’s dad btw) hated Bayou. Just a tip if watching any movie set in this era if any of the black characters are insufferable human beings just know it’s almost always internalized racism unfortunately. The dad and Willie Earl’s issue with Bayou was MUCH deeper than jealousy, the internalized racism is what drove the jealousy because they were both colorist which is why the dad lies and tells Bayou he basically isn’t his dad because he hates that Bayou is dark just like him and he favors Willie Earl because he wishes he were light skinned. Willie Earl idolizes the dad so much because he was treated preferentially by him which is why he’s mean to Bayou because it warrants praise from the dad and later his hatred grows stronger and essentially drives him to plot to kill his own brother because his dad was quite literally the ONLY person who preferred him to Bayou so that REALLY set him off because he was raised being told he was better on top of seeing his dad be killed he straight up blamed Bayou for everything bad that happened in his life. I just felt so bad when you guys were hoping Bayou and Willie Earl would reconcile I had to explain that fact 😭😭
