Amy is absolutely correct that Black Americans are the definition of patriotism. Art History professor here.
When I got done watching this I felt more intelligent than I was 5 min. before it. Thank you 🙏
I, too, sing America. I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen When company comes, But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong. Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table When company comes. Nobody’ll dare Say to me, “Eat in the kitchen,” Then. Besides, They’ll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed— I, too, am America. Langston Hughes
What a beautiful human being. Regarding the honor of being chosen to paint the former First Lady’s portrait: it couldn’t have happened to a nicer, more talented artist. Amy’s words honoring Kristin in this interview brought me close to tears. I was deeply moved, thank you for posting.
I was deeply moved by this segment. I learned much about art during this segment. Her choices: personal, deep, thoughtful, resistant, representative. Thank you Ms. Sherald.
My grandmother was born on 4th of July and name is Liberty Bell . Patriotism is literally in my blood. Growing up in a country that doesn’t love me back is very depressing.
She is amazing. When I first looked at Michelle Obamas painting, I was stunned by the artwork. Now I know who is behind the painting & I want to know more about her, she is outstanding.
Thank you Amy for your powerfully creative paintings, for the brilliance in expression, and dedication to the future generations. Great interview fellow American.
A true American treasure. I saw the Brianna Taylor painting in DC and it floored me . I was moved to tears it was so beautiful.
I was deeply moved by this segment. I’d recorded it, so I watched it 3 more times. Then saved it so that I can share with my GRANDson, who is also an artist. Her exit statement was so POWERFUL 💜🙏🏾
