A very godly young gentleman used to attend my Bible studies for 5 to 6 years. He was such a lovely person. He became a monk on Mount Athos. He always wanted to live a life of contemplation. May he be forever blessed.
I was on Mount Athos a week ago and attended the evening service at the Panteleimon Monastery. It lasted for five hours—I still don’t know how I managed to stand through all five hours. Then I attended the morning service, confessed, and received Holy Communion… The feelings and grace I experienced are beyond words. I believe that during the service, we touch the Kingdom of Heaven—just a little, just for a moment… Glory to You, O Lord!
What a rare privilege for we outsiders to be shown this sanctuary. Thank you to 60 Minutes for filming and reuploading this documentary, and to the monks for allowing us a glimpse into one of the most impressive places on the planet. May it be protected for another thousand years.
I am Orthodox Christian, this video penentrated me to tears. Lord, cleanse my soul and save me.
What an incredibly beautiful documentary
An old wise priest once told me that his wife (yes, priests outside of Agios Oros must be married) was diagnosed with some condition that meant she could not get pregnant. Of course the priest would hear none of it and became relentless in prayer. In despair, he begged and bargained with God : 'Please, just grant us one son, and I will not protest if you chose to take him at any time, I will forever be in your debt.' Soon after his wife gave birth to a healthy boy. By the age of 16 that boy felt that he did not fit in with society in a western world. His father called in some favors and the kid finished off his studies in Greece , and there after at Mount Athos, where he has been ever since. The priest is almost 90 now, having lived a fruitful life in service to his church and community, and with many grand children from the four other kids God blessed him with.
I visited Simonopetra monastery last year. My first visit, was 31 years ago, when i was 14 years old. Many things have changed. For one, there's heating and electric power these days, and the monastery is much more beautiful than it used to be, but some things never change. The sense of serenity and peace, for one. Within a day, i suspect due to a lack of anxiety, whatever small pains i had, were gone. You talk less, you don't shout, you listen a lot more and you contemplate much more. It's a wonderful environment.
FOR US GREEKS ITSA GIFT AND A PRIVILEGE..MY FIRST TIME TO ATHOS(AGION OROS) WHEN I WAS 12 YEARS OLD..EVER SINCE I M VISITING IT EVERY YEAR..ITS A PLACE OF WONDERS..BELIEVE ME...SOME OF THESE MONKS ARE SPIRITUAL GIANTS....EVERYBODY CAN VISIT ATHOS..RELIGION IS NOT A PROBLEM
When traveling thru Greece, we went to Thessaliki and there was an exhibition from Mount Athos and Phillip of Macedonia. They were extraordinary.
My name is Roman and I am from Ethiopia. I really want ask the team, who were fortunate to visit mount Athos, to come to Ethiopia and visit the different monasteries of Orthodox church. There are also male and female separate monasteries. I assure you, you will like it.
