Dad was American military and I lived there. It was a beautiful place to live and utopian for Americans. I have great memories there but no matter my experience it still does not make it right that Panama was not given more opportunities to govern its own land. What this failed to pint out is that the treaty was negotiated by a Frenchman representing Panama. There was no real opportunity for Panama to seek a fair deal. This has also not pointed out that Panama has done an amazing job running the canal. They deserve the right to be a sovereign nation. Transitioning the canal and the zone back to Panama has improved relations with the U.S. as well. Colonialism no matter how well the occupied are treated is still not just or right. I sure do miss living there in that beautiful idyllic space but I am happy that Panama has done so well. Que viva Panama!

In 1903 the revolution was organized by the US, because they wanted to build a canal there and Colombia opposed it. That's why the new state was recognized by the US withing 3 days after the revolts started. Say it like it really happened! Today, the country of Panama is doing a great job running the canal, they have expanded it to accommodate bigger ships, and the money collected on tolls goes to the Panamanian people.
