Carlos is the greatest PR guy out there. I really admire how he βsellsβ things, in this case, Amazon culture. Obviously, Amazon is such a massive company that it is totally impossible to give comments that applies to everyone. So I donβt believe those guys that say that Amazon culture is 100% hell. But also, I do not believe the other ones that sell that it is heaven, like Carlos in this case. I really like the way that Steve laughs and keep silence. The interview was greatly managed. And donβt get me wrong, Carlos feels like a super nice guy and totally passionate, but this feels like a massage for Amazon culture and building the narrative as part of the job. I really liked the part talking about mistakes and learnings though.
ever since I was a kid, I wanted to bring value to customers

Please keep up with the honest interviews! This one was really relevant to your audience, thank you (P.S.: current Amazonian here so it did resonate a lot)

Why don't we invest in testing until something blows up like Carlos describes? I think there's an innate bias to believe that once something is "working" it's job done. Sort of an extension of "works on my machine" to "works in prod under certain conditions". Most of us have seen "black swan" or "perfect storm" scenarios unfold but we still are seduced by nice looking graphs and we are quick to tell ourselves "things are good".
My layoff was also the best thing that ever happened to me. I was at an awful company stuck in a low paying role with no hope of moving up. Turned a temp to perm role at the new place into an offer and got my first promotion shortly afterward on my way to 6 figures there! And it never would have happened at my old job that I was desperately clinging to.
I have a naive question: I come from a multiple repo world similar to Amazon, I didn't understand Carlos's comment around Google codebase being a single repo, it just sounds too good to be true. How is that possible? He says, a bad code checkin can take down entire company, why would google do this. I am also unable to understand the deployment part if google has a mono repo codebase. Can someone elaborate a bit on how is code structured at Google?
Business leaders will always cut IT until something breaks. It's a fact of life.
