On 42 mins but getting close
I am 39, Im a man, I quit smoking 4 months ago. Last May 2025 i did sub 40, july 2025 i did sub 21. From 72 kg to 68 kg as of now.
I recently PB’d 19:54 at age 42.
I started running exactly a year ago. At the end of September 2024, I ran my first 10K race, maintaining a tempo of 6:00–6:10 per kilometre and accelerating over the final few hundred metres. In March of this year, I ran 5 km with a tempo of 5:05 per km (and just below 5 for the last few metres). My training consisted mostly of 5k runs once per week, sometimes twice during autumn/winter. I ran mostly in Zone 3 and sometimes do some interval training with sprints. So, no matter how you run, as long as you run consistently, you will see results.
Currently at 21:10 and looking at cracking that sub 20!!!
What I would add to this video is: do a warmup run before your sub 20 min attempt, at least 10 min with some accelerations. I think it can get something like 30 seconds off your finishing time.
Never expected to see you during my run this morning 😂 Great videos!
Great video Ben! I'm 67 now so not much chance of a sub 20 - However... when I was able to run a sub 20 5K, weekly intervals were a core session for me. Agree that negative splits are the key to make it more pleasant. Slow running wasn't part of the equation in those days! I'm aiming to get back in the 7's now so the training tips will be useful. Thanks!
ufff thats some serious requirements you put there. 19:22 PB for 5km month ago with 3sessions a week with 20-30km weekly at 42 years of age in my 2nd running season...
lol, I'm struggling to break 34 minutes but this is still a great video. Thanks for another good episode.
