Internal Vulnerabilities of Liberal Democracy and the Necessary Role of Political Rhetoric

Understand the internal weaknesses threatening liberal democracy, from economism to misplaced faith in progress, to effectively counter political manipulation. Learn how historical leaders harnessed empathy-driven rhetoric to restore national stability during profound crises.

Short Summary

  • Recognize three primary internal vulnerabilities: Economism, Transnationalism (elite parochialism), and Naïve Trust in Progress.
  • Note that democracy's survival relies on managing innate human passions, principally the urge to dominate (libido dominandi).
  • Affirm that skillful, empathetic rhetoric is a necessary, though not sufficient, tool for leaders to draw citizens toward "better angels."

Bill Galston discusses his analysis of why liberal democracies are failing from within, arguing that ignoring cultural values in favor of purely economic assessments (economism) leaves populations empty. This intellectual thinness, coupled with the decline of civil society, allows quasi-religious fervor to attach itself to demagogues. Galston emphasizes that while institutions structure government, political speech must actively counter negative emotions like anger and fear to maintain civic concord.

Conservatives wouldn't believe they were being "persecuted" if it hadn't been for the liars and demagogues at Fox News pushing this unreasonable narrative into their minds.

Listening to this reinforces my impression that a good part of America's crisis of governance is the religiosity around the "founding fathers" and the constitution as if it were Gospel. Democracy has to be seen as a continual work in progress and not encoded in static texts and institutions.

There is a Death Cult propelled by Dominionism cloaked in the Prosperity Gospel which is indoctrinating our children - THIS is far more of a threat than our Coastal Intellectuals seem to grasp. Megachurches are THRIVING - and they are now EMBEDDED IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

Killing innocent fishermen in the gulf is…murder, but John Roberts declared the orange sociopath above the law itself
