I could totally relate to the exercise. I was second to the youngest of 8 and I was the quiet one. The one who got the message about being quiet and out of the way. After we became adults I spoke to my older siblings about how they made me feel. Most have apologized and now understand. I still am the caretaker though. I have nursed my spouse, my sibling, and my mother through their end of life. I enjoy being the caretaker, but I am not longer the quiet one. I have found my voice.

We feel authority before we understand it! So true! Every word of this is full of value! Thank you 🙏

Wow, I feel called out. That was a core trauma of mine, we were playing soccer in first grade, I was running around chasing the ball and unconsciously laughing of joy when one of the bigger second graders loudly and sarcastically copied my laughter, letting me know it was not acceptable. It might sound trivial, and maybe it was, but I shrank after that day, so as to not get in the way again.

i didn’t realize how much i still shrink in conversations until i notice my body tensing and my words trying to soften themselves. this made something click about how presence lands before language. it reminded me of a line in for those of you who feel invisible about how staying small once kept us safe, but eventually keeps us unheard. that thought has been sitting with me, the difference between trying to convince someone and simply being felt.
