Description

Steve Stewart-Williams is a evolutionary psychologist, a professor and an author. If you follow the thread of evolution long enough, you see that humans are simply a product of adaptations. So why are humans so peculiar? Does everything we do have a rational explanation, or are there aspects of our lives and psychology we have yet to understand? Expect to learn how aliens would view our species if they were observing from above, what most people get wrong about understanding sex differences, Steve’s best explanation for the gender equality paradox, why humans have such strange sexual desires, why men tend to insult their intimate partners, how to deal with the discomfort of learning evolutionary psychology, my spicy new theory on dysgenic gene erosion and much more... - 00:00 The Evolutionary Role of Culture 05:03 We Are Born to Maximise Grandchildren 11:40 What Most People Get Wrong About Sex Differences 16:27 How Men & Women Feel Jealousy Differently 20:15 Why Women Have Concealed Ovulation 26:05 Role of Socialisation in Sex Differences 38:15 Did Ancient Men Actually Do More of the Hunting? 42:57 The Paradox of Gender Equality 49:51 Our Ancestral Mating Setup 59:23 The Bizarre Way to Predict Mating Preferences 1:03:16 The Mutual Mate Choice Model 1:09:24 Why Some Men Insult Intimate Partners 1:12:30 Applying EvPsych Into Daily Life 1:23:03 Do Common Mutations Occur in Different Generations? 1:29:19 Where to Find Steve - Get access to every episode 10 hours before YouTube by subscribing for free on Spotify - https://spoti.fi/2LSimPn or Apple Podcasts - https://apple.co/2MNqIgw Get my free Reading List of 100 life-changing books here - https://chriswillx.com/books/ Try my productivity energy drink Neutonic here - https://neutonic.com/modernwisdom - Get in touch in the comments below or head to... Men and women are different. If they aren't, let's just have one league for all sports. Also, men and women think differently. Hormones, neurotransmitters, and brain connectome show that. It's odd how people are trying to deny reality.

Because we're going forward with emotions, not logic.

9:45 I think a huge problem with that conclusion is that people tend to conflate xenophobia and racism. Xenophobia has been a great tool for survival through unity and our affinity for visual difference very likely stems from that. It's why we have stereotypes that pretty clearly identify people from different regions (noses, eyes, lips, facial hair, etc.). It's simply that skin colour happens to be the most obvious of these observed differences.

At the end of the talk you were both bizarrely close to just describing the movie GATTACA. It even has a scene where a guy has to hide his myopia (proof of bad genes and lack of embryo selection by his parents) and nearly runs into traffic. If anyone reading this hasn’t seen it yet but is interested in the potential societal impacts of embryo selection/large scale genetic screening, it is a fascinating movie.

The most interesting conversation here, IMHO, would be a conversation between Steve Stewart-Williams and Bret Weinstein, perhaps mediated by Mr. Williamson here. 1:28:20 - Bret Weinstein has proposed a mechanism for this that he calls "lineage selection" in which there is selection for traits that benefit their offspring or the offspring of those closely related to them in the far future. I'm not sure if it's powerful enough to create the effects Chris proposes, but it's an interesting idea.
