What to do When You’ve Lost Purpose in Life - Chris Bumstead
Navigating Life Direction: Structure, Self-Worth, and Goal Pursuit
Discover essential strategies for handling periods of life directionlessness, focusing on finding constant structure through habits and grounding self-worth in controllable personal values rather than external outcomes.
Short Summary
- Embrace being lost as an opportunity to pause, reflect, and discover better paths, rather than sticking to a comfortable but unfulfilling trajectory.
- Use physical activity (like the gym) and deep relationships as essential anchors when external control dissipates.
- Base self-worth on living according to internal, controllable values rather than external validation or inevitable negative feedback. This conversation explores the tension between process-focused living and outcome-driven motivation, particularly in high-stakes fields like professional bodybuilding, concluding that rigid process detachment might undermine the necessary drive for peak performance.

I have this feeling that so many good men are struggling with mental health nowadays. Might be subtle, might not be as hard as clinical depression, but some days feel really low. Especially when you feel like you're your the only "strong person" in your life circle and you're always there for others but seems like nobody is there for you
All who are lost wander, but not all who wander are lost.
Chris is an elite-level athlete who has accomplished a great deal in his life. Yet, he still has the same questions that everyone along the success spectrum has. If you’re reading this, please realize that no matter where you are in your life, you’ll always have struggles, challenges to overcome, and feelings of being lost. The important thing is to practice gratitude and live life on your terms.
“And when you keep winning” was cold

I feel pretty lost and lonely in pharmacy school. Moving out and being surrounded by people yet still feel so lonely and empty. The gym helps a bit but sadly that’s only 2 hours of my day.
