The Predator took off his mask and energy weapon because the final battle wasn't Hunter and Prey. It was Warrior to Warrior, Face to Face.

It boggles my mind how many people don't get the ending when he drops his weapon and takes off his mask. He's not sizing up his skull he's trying to figure out how in the world this guy has been such a struggle to kill, and he's looking to see if there's some kind of difference. He drops his weapon and takes off the mask so they can face each other "man to man" or warrior to warrior because he respects the fact that Arnold has been such a worthy adversary and now wants to face him in hand to hand combat. It's basically the same as Billy - gets rid of the gun, draws first blood on himself, and faces the Predator old school knowing if he's going to die anyway, go out like a man.

42:38 Billy realizes this hunter wants the challenge more than anything and guns don't seem to be working. He decides he'd rather go out fighting than being hunted and challenges the hunter to a melee battle, perhaps thinking he might have a shot that way. As for cutting himself; It's to deny the predator the honor of drawing first blood/hunting a 'pristine' specimen. It's essentially Billy giving him the finger.

It was the summer of 1987, I was 13 years old. Me and my best friend had seen the trailer to this movie several times. So.. we both decided to save enough money from running errands for the elderly in our community so that we could go see this movie on opening day. We walked more than two miles to our small western NC small town movie theater to see it. It was still daylight when we got there and we both loved the movie. When it was over, neither of us had thought about having to walk home in the dark, through the woods and past over grown fields. We were both absolutely terrified that the Predator was in the trees stalking us the entire way back home.😂😂😂

Two future governors were on that mission - Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jessie Ventura.

This is an all-time classic. IMO, the first and best Predator movie.

Another interesting fact: i read an interview with Arnold after the movie was released. The scene where they are making their stand and realize that the Predator is using the trees to move and Dutch gets frustrated with the arguing about whats really going on, so he walks out into the open as human bait and the Predator gets caught in the net right behind him...Arnold said that was an added scene and none of them knew what was going to happen. They were just told to react. Arnold said when that happened right behind him that he just about shit his pants it scared him so bad. This was the director's idea and he wanted genuine and realistic reactions from them. I always love watching that scene now and watching their faces and reactions knowing this! Classic!

Dutch’s arm wasn’t blasted off, because the Predator’s shot actually hit the gun. And it does matter if you’re armed or not… Poncho was holding a gun, and that’s why Dutch kicked it out of Anna’s hand.

Billy definately heard that shit, he was looking in the same direction and was just as scared when it cried out
