So weird seeing an actual official video with 350 views that has these three guys in it.
The one quote that's always stuck with me, and it comes from a freakin' Star Wars novelization of all things, is that "Hard work beats talent when talent does no work."
what sucks the most is having zero talent for the thing you're passionate about. you can get good with decades of practice but there will always be some 15 year old effortlessly walking circles around you. you can't be mad at them for it but god it's frustrating.
I'm of the belief that anything can be learned well if one puts the time and energy into it, and talent is simply the ability to pick up on a skill much more quickly than other people. Everyone's brain just works at different speeds, there's no standard for the ability to learn.
5:06 Bob that's called executive disfunction, and yes, it does suck. 🙃
From my personal observations talent does exist - there are some skills, actions, and abilities that people can be naturally better at the first time around than others. This doesn't mean that people without talent can't reach the same level of excellence as those with talent, just that some people have it easier or are more passionate about dabbling in that particular skill than others. Likewise having a talent in something doesn't guarantee excellence, and some people have actively had to ignore or set their talent aside for other career options because of monetary or other outside pressures. Ultimately my food for thought is that we shouldn't use talent as a way to gatekeep a person's desire to do something - you don't need talent to have passion in what you want to do.
I'm not listening yet, because I'm saving up episodes to get me through the holidays!
i found this episode really uplifting; i've never been inherently talented at one thing or another and with people being so naturally gifted at the things i want to do it can be extremely disheartening. it's honestly comforting to know that I dont have to be the best at something to do well at it - i just have to be consitent/persistent! love u guys!! been listening to distractible chronologically through the past year and it's getting me through some shit <3
MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The ability to sell comes down to the ability to generate hype. It's super fun getting people to think that buying the thing you're selling would be the best idea. The trick is empathy. You have to know how to be on the same side of the purchaser. Right down to calling one thing you're selling "stupid" just to make them buy another thing.
