Description

Can the Lucid Gravity's amazing driving experience overcome its serious build quality flaws? We pit it against the proven Rivian R1S to name the definitive electric luxury SUV winner. Lucid Gravity: https://www.edmunds.com/lucid/gravity/?utm_source=youtube&utm_campaign=youtube_description Rivian R1S: https://www.edmunds.com/rivian/r1s/?utm_source=youtube&utm_campaign=youtube_description Appraisal Tool - https://www.edmunds.com/appraisal/ Car Listings - https://www.edmunds.com/new-cars-for-sale/ Ratings and Reviews - https://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/ 00:00 Intro 01:22 Gravity Interior, Tech, & Storage 11:43 Gravity Driving Impressions 14:33 R1S Interior, Tech, & Storage 21:14 R1S Driving Impressions 24:29 Edmunds' EV Range & Charging Test 26:00 Value 29:04 Edmunds' Take The battle for the top spot in the electric luxury SUV space is heating up, and two American startups are leading the charge. In one corner, you have the established and adventure-ready Rivian R1S. In the other, the all-new, high-tech Lucid Gravity. We put both through the full Edmunds testing gauntlet, including our real-world EV range test, to see which one truly deserves your money. The Lucid Gravity is, in a word, phenomenal to drive. It combines a spacious, airy cabin with ride and handling characteristics that put most rivals to shame. On paper and behind the wheel, its potential is undeniable. However, our pre-production test vehicle was plagued by significant build quality issues—from inconsistent panel gaps to interior trim problems—that are impossible to ignore on a vehicle this expensive. That’s where the Rivian R1S builds its case. It feels like a finished, mature product. The build quality is solid, its blend of on-road comfort and off-road capability is deeply impressive, and its packaging is relentlessly clever. While it doesn’t quite match the Gravity’s stellar driving dynamics or ride comfort, the R1S is the complete package, right here, right now. So, which is the better electric luxury SUV? While the Lucid Gravity has the potential to be the class leader, its current quality control holds it back. For today, our editors agree: the polished and proven Rivian R1S is the one we’d park in our own driveways. This obsession with glass roofs without built-in shades needs to end. Tesla started this, along with air vents controlled by a screen. Please go back to what works. Great comparison test. I hope Lucid survives because I’m very interested in their planned mid-size vehicles.

R63 shows “the guts” when folding seats. Edmunds pretty much hates Lucid

I agree the lucid sunshades are fiddly, but the host was using them upside down and incorrectly. If you properly check left vs right and get the clips in correctly you can use the sunshade at the same time. In the video you can see that the clips are upside down.

I don't even know why Lucid even sells a two row Gravity. The thing that makes the car amazing is the comfort of the third row and the ability to completely stow it away. They should instead sell a version with captain's chairs.

Dear Edmunds. The roof mesh cover for the Driver seat works well as it clips on to 3 sides. It does not need the Visors. I lived with this all summer. It works great. No issues. It doesnt fall on you. It reduces heat. It looks good inside and out.

OK, the fact that the seat moves forward and shows you “the guts” is to make sure that the Seats fold completely flat. Which makes it have amazing capacity for moving things, yeah, I’d be nice if it automatically re-deployed itself, but it’s not just a disadvantage

I got an early '22 Lucid Air GT. The software was a mess, but not as bad as some others at that time. What amazed me was the pace of Lucid's over the air software updates that continue to this day, making the system more responsive, reliable, and adding new features. Lucid is serious about their updates, and this allows improvements to vehicle controls far beyond just the infotainment system. I don't need an SUV that size, but if I did I wouldn't hesitate to choose the Lucid since I do more highway driving than offroad. The Rivian is seriously good offroad.

Lucid typically earns high marks for their interior from other reviewers, so I appreciate hearing a counter opinion. Surprising to hear Edmunds say the R1 third row was comfortable. After being in one, there’s decent leg room but the seat felt very low to the ground, and I couldn’t imagine an adult being comfortable there on a longer trip. Aside from being electric vehicles with 3 rows, I feel like they have little in common. Rivian has real off road and adventure chops, while the Lucid is driving, performance, & practicality focused. Driving dynamics to me is an absolute winner, Lucid Gravity.

This is a three-row electric vehicle comparison, but that doesn't mean this pair didn't bring high performance to our test track, with both SUVs putting up 0-60 mph times in the low 3-second range. It's impressive supercar levels of acceleration on both fronts. But how important is that to you when you're shopping for a family car? Let us know in the comments below!
