Computer Science Degree Unemployment Soars -- Learn to Starve
Crisis in Tech Employment: Overtraining, Job Focus, and Market Saturation
Learn why the tech job market is saturated, why recent computer science graduates face high unemployment, and what core skills—not certifications—employers truly value now.
Short Summary
- The tech labor market was likely saturated before 2017, evidenced by previous investment patterns showing high startup failure expectations.
- Recent computer science graduates face unemployment rates significantly higher (up to double) the national average, coinciding with the rise of AI programming tools.
- Employers prioritize demonstrated problem-solving ability, evidenced by a strong GitHub portfolio, over specific certifications or academic pedigree.
- This session analyzes the decades-long cycle of tech hype, political pushes for coding education, and the mismatch between new graduates' focus and real industry needs.
This session analyzes the current "disaster" in tech employment, arguing that the industry has been overhiring and overtraining for years. Speaker Eli emphasizes that success now depends on intrinsic motivation to solve technical problems, not meeting externally created expectations based on past hype cycles.

I have been following Eli for 15 years now and he still has not told me how to get a job.
"You merely graduated into bad economy. I was born into it. Molded by it. By time I was 30 I was still in an unpaid internship."
"You merely adopted poverty. I was born in it. Molded by it."
Eli, when is your wife going to let you back into the house?
Graduated with a law degree in 2008... labour market was fucked. Spend a year on making a website about invoices and debt recovery destined to citizens and small businesses. When I finally landed a interview, I showed my website and got hired the same day. That's how I got my food in the door.
As a U.S. citizen with over 10+ years in the industry, I’ve seen firsthand how many remote roles are filled by overseas talent often at the expense of qualified American workers. Our leaders must prioritize U.S. citizens for economic stability and national security. Let’s stand up for our younger generation and protect opportunities at home.
ELI, I am an IT expert and every time I watch your videos, I lose hope in the IT industry even though I have an iron clad job that isn't going anywhere. After viewing this video I feel like my job is already gone. Where is the old Eli that taught us IT skills? LOL.
Now it's time to learn to cope
I love that Eli is just doing a video from inside his tool shed.
The same thing happened in the 1960’s. Russia and Sputnik scared the United States government and they went overboard convincing everyone who could do the math to become an engineer or mathematician. The slogan was “To get a good job, get a good education.” Then when we graduated from college there were no jobs for us. One of my engineer friends opened up a hamburger stand.
