My other channel, Great Books Explained here - https://www.youtube.com/@greatbooksexplained371 Please consider supporting this channel on Patreon (and getting exclusive content), thanks! https://www.patreon.com/user?u=53686503 or if you prefer a one-off donation - https://paypal.me/GreatArtExplained?country.x=GB&locale.x=en_GB Alternatively, every video has a "thanks" button under it- I appreciate it! Édouard Manet, a precursor to the Impressionists, turned convention on its head. He painted the environment he knew well as a member of the bourgeoisie from an aristocratic lineage: Picnics, boating, concerts, masked balls, and the salons of Paris, but he painted it from a radical point of view. Manet took the ordinary everyday theme or convention and then created something extraordinary, something profound. IMPORTANT! I've always enjoyed looking at this painting. I knew of Victorine Meurant as Manet's favourite model but never realised she was a talented artist in her own right. Thank you.

This is genuinely my favourite channel and, from looking at the comments, you've really hit on a format with wide appeal. From genuinely artsy folk to art simpletons, like myself, who like looking at art, but can't really explain why they do or much of what they are looking at. Your videos also have real rematch value for someone like me who doesn't retain everything at first viewing. If you ever turn your videos into a book, I would absolutely buy it.

Are you aware that this is the best channel on YouTube? And this particular video is another masterpiece along with Rothko & the original Hopper video. This made my day.

Great scholarship, as usual. And thank you for defining the difference between "nude" and "naked."
