Analyzing Francis Bacon's 'Three Studies' and Wartime Trauma

Discover alternative interpretations of Francis Bacon's breakthrough triptych, linking the figures' agony to the visceral reality of WWII London.

Short Summary

  • The painting, Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion (1944), is widely recognized as Bacon's artistic breakthrough moment.
  • The distorted, biomorphic forms draw inspiration from Picasso and Bacon’s direct trauma serving as an air raid warden sifting through London rubble.
  • An alternative theory suggests the figures are gasping for air due to Bacon’s severe asthma, not merely screaming, providing personal context to the art.

Description

I am planning on a full length Francis Bacon film for my channel, but here is a short I made about the Francis Bacon painting I look at in my upcoming book (Oct 2 in UK and Oct 14 Worldwide at all the usual booksellers). My book, like my channel tries to, looks into more alternative ideas around the painting. It's my first attempt at being a proper 'presenter'. Hope you like it. Full length content coming shortly!

Not screaming. Asthma.and real twisted bodies in bombed buildings... Convincing and revealing.

I generally don't like abstract art. But, I make an exception for Bacon. I love his triptychs, especially his Three Figures paintings and studies. There's something powerful, emotional, scary, surreal and eerie about them, all at the same time.

was lying in bed thinking about Bacon...I know! convinced those entities are phallic, related to his possibly self-loathing sexuality Thanks so much for the new context to consider!
