From Steam to Speed: The Evolution of the Locomotive (S2, E3) | Trains Unlimited | Full Episode
The Locomotive's Two-Century Leap: From Steam Rocket to Digital Powerhouse
Discover the dramatic, two-hundred-year evolution of the locomotive, tracing its journey from noisy, coal-burning steam engines to the computerized, high-speed missile cabs shaping 21st-century freight and passenger transport.
Short Summary
- Achieve faster speeds: Witness the leap from the Rocket's 14 mph average to the modern SD-90 Mac cruising at 72 mph.
- Master manufacturing change: Track how small innovators like Lima forced giants like Baldwin and ALCO to adopt new standards, culminating in the diesel dominance of EMD.
- Understand crew transformation: See how the fireman's strenuous role in managing fire gave way to automatic cooling systems and computerized controls in the whisper cab.
- Identify technological breakthroughs: Learn how Superpower, the shift to diesel-electric traction, and eventual computerization redefined rail hauling capacity.
This document chronicles the engineering narrative of the train that drove the Industrial Revolution. You will explore the foundational steam designs established by the Stephensons, follow the unique adaptations made by American builders, and pinpoint the precise innovations—like Superpower and the FT diesel electric—that ultimately ended the steam era. Understanding these shifts clarifies how engineering competition drives exponential technological improvement in heavy industry.

I miss shows like this that were actually fun and informative.😢
If it weren’t for this show being on when I was really young, I’m not quite sure how the rest of my life would’ve been! Thankful there was Trains Unlimited as part of my childhood
Funny looking at how hyped the SD90MAC is here. Nowadays they're either rebuilt or scrapped.
At least we have UP 4014 Big Boy back in service in modern time
Yessssss!!!! The only reason I’m subscribed to the channel. I love Trains Unlimited.
Trains are just...just so fascinating.
If I remember correctly , according to the book I have on the Nickel Plate railroad , they ran the Berkshire until July of 1965 . I was born in time to remember them running by my house as a boy.
Thank you for another trains unlimited upload! Really appreciate it
Oh the good old days of non reality History TV!
Cool! You usually don't see history on History.
