Defending Arguments: Why Conflict-Free Marriages Are Unhealthy

Learn the vital distinction between a destructive "fight" and a necessary "argument," and discover why celebrities claiming to never argue reveal deeper relational issues.

Short Summary

  • Avoidance of all conflict signals underlying apathy, fear, or one partner submitting completely.
  • Healthy relationships require structured "arguments" where partners persuasively assert their viewpoints.
  • Differentiate arguments (persuasion attempt) from "fights" (attempting to cause emotional pain); stop any interaction that devolves into a fight. This discussion dismantles the myth of the perpetually peaceful celebrity marriage, using Travis Kelce and George Clooney's comments to launch a defense of necessary marital discourse.

My Patriot Supply - Go to https://MyPatriotSupply.com/WALSH for this exclusive offer. Travis Kelce claims he's never been in an argument with his fiancee Taylor Swift. This is not the kind of story I would usually comment on, but I think it’s important to launch a defense of arguing in a marriage. Arguments are a form of passion. I don’t want a yes man for a husband and he doesn’t want a door mat for a wife.

Cloony is NOT someone to emulate.

Been married 43 years, together 46 years. I tell all the young people, you will not spend the rest of your life together and never argue. And when you’re young and stupid you might sometimes fight. If you think that never happens in a happy marriage then you will never get married or stay married.

It’s unnatural for any two people who spend a lot of time together to not argue.

Arguments are healthy. Discussions are healthy. Fights are not.

My husband and I see eye to eye on pretty much everything but there have still been a few disagreements. We never lash out, we never scream, we never call each other names. We've both learned so much about ourselves, each other, honest and healthy communication, etc. Those moments are where you grow most together, IMO.

The problem is coming up in the definitions. To many people, what you described here as an argument is what they'd call a disagreement, and what you describe as a fight is to their definition, an argument. And then fighting… Well fighting is screaming, throwing things and hands. So before contradicting that they've never had an argument, you have to define terms with the couple.

To never argue means one of you is basically a doormat. In this situation I'd guess it's probably Travis.

They have this opinion because they aren’t actually married. If your apart 90% of the time you aren’t actually married.

“My mother used to say couples who say they never argue are not communicating!” And “ if you agree about everything then one of you ain’t necessary”
