Analyzing The Reasons Behind Veganism’s Decline

Discover the central reasons cited for the decline of veganism, moving beyond mere food trends to examine societal mood and philosophical inconsistencies.

Short Summary

  • Veganism’s trend success has reversed, evidenced by falling Google search volumes and sales declines for major product lines like Beyond Meat.
  • The Financial Times writer attributes the loss primarily to a societal decline in idealism amid overwhelming global crises (e.g., Ukraine, COVID).
  • The speaker determines the failure stems fundamentally from the food’s repugnant taste and the moral incoherence of the underlying philosophy.

This analysis dissects a Financial Times article on veganism's recent failure, contrasting the author’s theory of cultural malaise with the host’s argument that the diet fails on basic sensory and logical grounds.

Not a vegan, but I have had many awesome vegan meals. NONE of them involved fake meat

We never needed meat substitutes and that is where they went wrong. I do not want fake versions of what we have now. If I want a great vegetarian dish my Chinese restaurant is right around the corner. It comes down to preparing vegetables with tasty sauces and presentation

We are also to make certain the beasts of the field are treated humanly and never abused. We've failed

At first, I thought this said, "Nobody likes Vegas". I mean, that's partially true too 😂

“True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to fore only when its recipient has no power. Humanity’s true moral test, its fundamental test, consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect humankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it.” -Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, 1984

“The day may come when the rest of the animal creation may acquire those rights which never could have been witholden from them but by the hand of tyranny. The French have already discovered that the blackness of the skin is no reason why a human being should be abandoned without redress to the caprice of a tormentor. It may one day come to be recognized that the number of the legs, the villosity of the skin, or the termination of the os sarrum, are reasons equally insufficient for abandoning a sensitive being to the same fate. What else is it that should trace the insuperable line? Is it the faculty of reason, or perhaps the faculty of discourse? But a full-grown horse or dog is beyond comparison a more rational, as well as a more conversable animal, than an infant of a day, or a week, or even a month, old. But suppose they were otherwise, what would it avail? The question is not, Can they reason nor Can they talk? But, Can their suffer?” -Jeremy Bentham , Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation, ch. XVII.

People don’t like vegans because when we call out factory farms scalding pigs alive due to botched throat cuttings, it’s inconvenient for the meat market and the lifestyles of the entire US population.

I am Plant based, and I never eat the fake meat and cheese. I make all my meals from scratch....beans, veggies, rice, etc. The fake meat is processed and in my opinion just as bad for you then regular meats and cheeses.

I was vegan for a short while in attempt to lose weight, and the diet made me very sick. I had come to terms with the fact that I need meat and eggs to be healthy (though rarely eat dairy). Many of these fake foods are far worse for you than the things they're supposed to replace - margarine is worse for you than butter, most brands of almond milk are worse for you than dairy milk, vegan fake burgers are worse for you than ground beef or other meats, etc.
