PBS Member Stations rely on viewers like you. To support your local station, go to:http://to.pbs.org/DonateSPACE The molecular basis of all life is mysteriously asymmetric, only using molecules on one side of what should be the equivalent mirrored pairs. The universe has a similar mirror asymmetry, and it may be that our very DNA inherited its twist from the underlying handedness of reality. Become patreon subscribers, don’t let the defunding of PBS stop this content, we need more knowledge not less if we’re gonna make it. I’ve done my part.

It’s not even close, this has been my number one channel on YouTube since 2020. Admittedly, I throw on a playlist before I go to bed. So glad Dr. O’Dowd never shouts.

Thank you to everyone who makes this awesome program possible. I'm a 2 time college drop out who loves learning while I commute. I hope you know how much these videos mean to me. Can't thank you all enough.

I love the notion that trying to shake hands with an alien whose chirality is the opposite of ours could be socially awkward. 😬

I think the most likely explanation is that the first self reproducing cell was right handed and came about as an extremely rare event that was so rare there would have been long odds against a left handed repeat

Unlike DNA, spiral staircases in castle towers should be left handed: most soldiers are right handed, so a tower's defenders (fighting down the staircase) are able to wield their weapons easily, whereas any attackers would be restricted by the staircase's central pillar. If the staircase were right handed, it's the attackers who'd have the advantage in hand-to-hand fighting.
