Duel First-Time Watch Reaction and Analysis of Suspense
Experience the intense, sustained anxiety generated by Stephen Spielberg's 1971 thriller, Duel (1971), as viewers react to its relentless on-road terror.
Short Summary
- Viewers felt extreme, prolonged anxiety due to the constant threat posed by the unseen truck driver.
- The film focuses almost entirely on the road rage dynamic, lacking the complex plotting found in Spielberg's later works, like Jaws.
- The experience reaffirmed that driving terror, especially without cell service, creates high-suspense cinema.
- The discussion highlights the effectiveness of keeping the antagonist (the truck driver) unseen for much of the runtime.
This document captures the real-time emotional response to watching Duel for the first time, focusing on the mounting suspense and the protagonist's desperate attempts to evade an unseen pursuer. The immediacy of the road terror and the historical context of Spielberg’s directorial debut provide key insights into masterful thriller construction.

Wow I was not expecting a Duel reaction from anyone.
Dennis Weaver was a great actor who unfortunately is largely forgotten today.
Not too many people react to this great thriller. Well done!
RIP Dennis Weaver (1924–2006)
Duel was originally a 1971 TV movie directed by Steven Spielberg, filmed in 1.33:1 (4:3) aspect ratio at 74 minutes long. The television release was so successful that it was expanded for a 1971 theatrical release at 1.85:1 (16:9) aspect ratio, and Spielberg spent two days filming additional scenes to expand the film to 90 minutes.
Saw this in the 70s as a teen and have never forgotten. Masterclass in how to build tension and terror. Awesome movie.
You can watch this and see how hungry Spielberg was. He shot this movie in basically two weeks and treated it as a major release and not just another TV movie. That's why is still holds up today. Steven has admitted that because of "Duel", he was able to make "Jaws". Thank you ladies for reacting to this!
LOVE this film!!! I Remember watching it when it premiered on ABC's Movie of the Night back as a kid. Back when nobody had ever heard of Spielberg. Great film and also a great actor in Dennis Weaver.
Most underrated flick in his catalog. And the reason he got Jaws.
My favorite writer of all time, Richard Matheson. Weaver told the story of how he was given the choice of directors at Spielberg's induction. Said he was glad he let him direct "Duel" and that he was available for another project any time.
