Description

Carly is back for this one, and I thought we were bracing for something scarier, but the real uncomfortable part was just not knowing who to trust for over an hour. We had some very confident wrong theories, and the ending was not what either of us expected. Hope you enjoy watching along with us! It's very timely that you posted this today because Laurence Olivier was born on May 22, 1907--so you posted this on his birthday!

Finally, a movie with Joan Fontaine. She and Olivia de Havilland were famous oscar-winning Hollywood sisters and rivals. So, it seems fitting to have two sisters watching her film.

The beauty of Hitchcock films wasn't the jump scare. It was the mind screw. His films had and still have a way of staying with a person long after they've seen them.

The genius of this movie is that we never meet the lead character - Rebecca. On the other hand, we never know the name of the real lead - the 2nd Mrs de Winter.

Rebecca is a brilliant novel and this is the best film adaptation.

I love the way old films frame the actors faces. People were so beautifully shot.

I think the reason this movie feels so different from other Hitchcock films is that studio head David O Selznick took a very active hand in this picture, since it was Hitch's first American film. A great follow-up to this would be Dial "M" For Murder, a genre film that's practically perfect and one of my top 5 Hitchcock works. Nice reaction, ladies!

Sir Laurence Olivier was considered the greatest actor of his generation ... actually possibly the 20th century. A fact widely accepted. Great in film and his reputation in the theater was possibly even higher. Dame Judith Anderson was also in another murder myster classic film called Laura. Her character, as Laura's aunt isn't exactly loving, but also not as diabolical as Danvers' . So glad you watched another older/better film. I'm so glad you're getting more used to and appreciative of the style and story telling of that era.

Dame Judith Anderson, who played Mrs Danvers, was a brilliant Australian actress and in this film she’s pretty terrifying!
