The Dark Side of Evolution

Evolution is one of the most useful lies sci-fi ever inherited. Not “lie” like it’s fake, evolution’s real, but the story we keep telling about it, like it’s a staircase where time automatically turns “primitive” into “advanced,” and the future is just the present with better posture and nicer lighting. Sci-fi is obsessed with that staircase, and it’s obsessed with breaking it. Because “evolution” is the perfect narrative cheat code, it lets writers change anything and still make it feel inevitable, grounded, and kind of responsible, whether that means new bodies, new minds, new societies, or something that used to be human but isn’t anymore. And the reason it hits so hard is that evolution isn’t a moral story, it’s a process. Sci-fi uses it like a flashlight on our assumptions and asks, which parts of “human” are permanent, and which are just temporary advantages?
