Ethan Hawke (Training Day, Before Sunrise) stars as true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt, who moves his family into a new home while researching his next book—only to discover a box of disturbing home movies in the attic. As Ellison watches the footage, he uncovers a pattern of brutal murders tied to a mysterious figure known as Bughuul, a pagan deity that feeds on children’s souls. As the investigation deepens, the line between reality and nightmare begins to blur, putting his entire family at risk. The film features some of the most haunting sequences in recent horror, including the infamous Super 8 home movie reels (like the “lawnmower” tape), the eerie presence of Bughuul in the background of images, and the slow-burn descent into terror as Ellison realizes the truth behind the curse. Supporting performances from Juliet Rylance (McMafia, Perry Mason) as Tracy Oswalt and James Ransone (It Chapter Two, The Wire) as the helpful Deputy add to the film’s grounded tension.
