Short Summary
- The practical racing sequences, filmed live at Grand Prix events, deliver unparalleled visual immersion and speed.
- Brad Pitt's portrayal of retired star Sonny Hayes effectively navigates PTSD and a high-stakes comeback arc.
- The technical dialogue and rule specifics occasionally challenged accessibility for non-Formula 1 viewers.
- The show concludes that while the film excels as spectacle, its storytelling received mixed reactions.
- Joseph Kosinski solidified his status as a master of high-octane action film direction, contrasting sharply with the script's reception.
This review covers the core experience of seeing F1: The Movie, focusing heavily on the visceral realism of the racing scenes shot alongside real events. The hosts analyze the character drama involving Sonny Hayes's return and rookie Joshua Pearce's rivalry. Fun Fact: most of this movie was filmed from all different F1 races throughout the world
The F1 movie uses actual footage of a real crash for the backstory of Brad Pitt's character, Sonny Hayes, specifically Martin Donnelly's devastating accident in the 1990 Spanish Grand Prix. The filmmakers, with Donnelly's permission and assistance, incorporated real images of his 160 mph crash, which led to the end of his racing career.
Few F1 facts for those that are new: - Average force needed to apply the brakes is 300-400 lbs - The drivers are subject to 5g of lateral force regularly in turns and breaking while driving laps - F1 drivers have the highest reflex speed of any professional athlete - At times the entire field of 20 drivers can be sperated by 1-2 seconds in qualifying between first and last place F1 is truly an amazing sport, if you liked this movie I highly recommend watching a race
That was Fernando Alonso who touches Brad's shoulder in the post race interview
33:34 what's even scarier... that's real. That's the actual footage of Martin Donnelly lying on the track with multiple broken bones.
That PITSTOP is not exactly editing , it is that fast in real 😂😂
Racing tires are known as "Slicks" because they don't have tread. They are actually better for traction because the entire surface touches the track and allows for max grip. We have tread on our tires because we drive in different environments much more often. Rain is the biggest reason and the tread helps disburse the water and let's the car keep traction.
25:31 even tho they’re on the same team, they still gotta fight for the better position (especially for P1). They’re still rivals
To answer Andrew's question: they filmed it at the different racing locations in the world. Brad Pitt talked about feeling stupid standing with the actual race drivers because they were pretending to be race car drivers amongst those legends.
