AN ABSOLUTE TOUR DE FORCE!! The Color Purple Full Reaction Watch Along: https://www.patreon.com/thereelrejects - Gift Someone (Or Yourself) An RR Tee! https://shorturl.at/hekk2 Tara & the Jo(h)ns return for a CLASSIC of historical fiction as they give their The Color Purple reaction, recap, commentary, analysis, & review. John Humphrey & Andrew Gordon react to and review The Color Purple (1985), the powerful historical drama directed by Steven Spielberg (Schindler’s List, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Saving Private Ryan) and based on the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel by Alice Walker. Set in the early 20th-century American South, the film tells a deeply emotional story of survival, resilience, and sisterhood as it follows Celie’s journey toward self-worth and independence. Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost, Sister Act) delivers a breakthrough performance as Celie Harris, a young Black woman enduring years of abuse and separation from her sister while searching for hope and identity. Alongside her, Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon, Predator 2) plays the domineering Mister, while Margaret Avery (Being Mary Jane, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins) portrays the bold and charismatic Shug Avery, whose friendship helps Celie begin reclaiming her voice. The film also features a young Oprah Winfrey (The Oprah Winfrey Show, Selma) as the fiercely protective Sofia, delivering one of the movie’s most unforgettable moments during the defiant “All my life I had to fight” speech. From Celie’s heartbreaking early life to the triumphant emotional reunion near the film’s end, The Color Purple remains one of the most impactful dramas of the 1980s. With its sweeping storytelling, unforgettable performances, and deeply moving themes of forgiveness, faith, and empowerment, the film continues to resonate with audiences decades after its release. #TheColorPurple #WhoopiGoldberg #StevenSpielberg #ClassicCinema #FilmReaction #MovieReview #OprahWinfrey #DramaFilm #CinemaHistory #React #ReactTo #Reaction The Color Purple (2023) Movie Reaction: https://youtu.be/c2crWXu1MHY The Green Mile (1999) Movie Reaction: https://youtu.be/4iG0ycLY8PU The Best Man (1999) Movie Reaction: https://youtu.be/JZly9Qlwk8w Hidden Figures (2016) Movie Reaction: https://youtu.be/FKSiTk0lQwo Madea's Family Reunion (2006) Movie Reaction: https://youtu.be/ikaLakLo4RU 0:00 Checking In! 2:08 The Color Purple Reaction 1:27:22 The Color Purple Review Follow Tara Erickson: https://www.youtube.com/@TaraErickson https://www.instagram.com/taraerickson/ https://twitter.com/thetaraerickson Follow Jon Maturan: https://www.instagram.com/jonmaturan/?hl=en Intense Suspense by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ RR Clips & Shorts Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ReelRejectsClips Follow TheReelRejects On The Socials: IG: https://www.instagram.com/reelrejects/ TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@thereelrejects?lang=en TWITTER: https://twitter.com/thereelrejects FB: https://www.facebook.com/TheReelRejects/ Music Used In Ad: Hat the Jazz by Twin Musicom is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Happy Alley by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Head Editor: https://www.instagram.com/prapermedia Supervising Producer: https://twitter.com/nerdchronic?lang=en Co-Editor: Greg Alba Co-Editor: John Humphrey Music In Video: Airport Lounge - Disco Ultralounge by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Follow & Listen to Us Wherever You Get Your Podcasts!! - Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3XHMwbveiznxSOGxN9XT0M - Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5tZWdhcGhvbmUuZm0vc3Rhci13YXJzLXRhbGs - Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-reel-rejects-tv-movie-recaps/id1616339990 - Audible: https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Apocalypse-Podcast/B08JJP58FG Ask Us A QUESTION On CAMEO: https://www.cameo.com/thereelrejects Follow GREG On INSTAGRAM & TWITTER: INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/thegregalba/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/thegregalba PLAYLISTS: Trailer Reactions & Reviews: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-bIhJVeYWw9ZsLdoAQFpx38s2hhyFgDe Movie Reviews: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-bIhJVeYWw-comtadVs8b9JsZEWHUyr8 Sketches & Short Films: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-bIhJVeYWw_zWuTRfBOUP3aYyIYRzc2y

One of the biggest failures by the Academy was to deny this film, it's actors and crew their awards. This film is a masterpiece.

Spielberg didn’t want to do the movie at first because he was afraid he couldn’t handle the depth and cultural significance of the story and thought it should be a black director instead. Quincy Jones talked him into doing it. They sought Spielberg out because they specifically wanted him to direct it and no one else. He worked closely with the cast to make sure the depiction was culturally accurate and appropriate.

Shug stopping Celie from killing Albert was because Shug didn't want her to go to jail over that man. It would only have made her life worse; we saw how bad off Sophia was when she came out, and she can can handle herself.

Oprah named her company Harpo for both reasons. Her name being Harpo backwards was one of the reasons why she felt she was destined to play Sophia in this movie.

An interesting thing I’ve noticed with these reactions is that the reactors don’t seem to pick up on the fact that Celie doesn’t know Mister’s real name. She hears it for the first time when Shug comes to visit, so that’s why she repeats it in awe a couple of times. All these years and she only knows him as Mister.

Danny Glover was put through agonizing emotions for this movie. When the sisters are torn apart Spielberg told the actresses, Akousa and Desreta, 'Don't let go of each other; Fight to get back to each other.' and told Danny 'Do everything to keep them apart.' The part where he hits their hands was the worst feeling. He kept apologizing to the girls and had to take a minute to calm down. I'm sure it broke him. I'm glad he got a semi good ending.

I read the book so I knew exactly why Shug had Celie so giggly 😂🤭

Shug and her dad didn’t have a incestious relationship. They just had a strained one cause Shug was considered a lustful and improper woman. And it was this big shame cause she was the daughter of a preacher
