My 4th grade teacher in 1972 asked each student what we wanted to be when we grew up. I said doctor. She said, “you mean a secretary don’t you?”. It resonated in my mind for a week. I started to surrender to her remark. Maybe I should be a secretary; after all , I am a very good typist. I then became depressed because my heart was set on science and being a doctor. I finally told my dad what happened in school and to say he “confronted”the teacher and the whole school administration is putting it mildly. Thanks Dad for believing I can be whatever I wanted to be. Signed, Surgeon
One of my favorite quotes that I actually apply to my life is "It is foolish to listen to someone who will not listen to you." It's changed the whole way I interact or care for others.
Can we PLEASE get a sciency-themed session of D&D with Neil, Chuck, and Charles??!! edit to add: it would be hella funny to use Chuck's group name joke from the David Chalmers episode at 29:05. legendary. Also, I think the only setting appropriate for these guys is something Lovecraftian. I imagine they would be more interested in a danger that is totally intangible since they already have a deep, modern understanding of the universe.
You guys are awesome! It's taken me nearly 70 years to learn that "you need to be who you really are."
At 27 years old trying to begin nursing school, I’m facing a lot of challenges getting into programs due to the choices I made academically as a young man that in no way reflect who I have grown and become. This conversation hit deep for me because I did try to fit the mold of what everyone needed me to be as opposed to being who I was deep down. Now I have a greater understanding of that and that self realization is what’s propelling me forward day in and out to keep striving toward the goals I aspire to meet that I’ve set for myself. Great Star talk today I really needed this.
One of the best pieces of advice I received when I was younger was: "Do what is right, not what is easy." It taught me to stay true to my values, even when faced with challenges. Whether in personal decisions, career choices, or friendships, this mindset has shaped the way I navigate life. It reminded me that integrity and perseverance always pay off in the long run.
I plan on listening to this again with my 12 yr old son who struggles in school. He’s so turned off by the system. He’s known since a young age that he doesn’t fit the mold (better yet, the mold does not fit him). This talk sums up what I’ve been trying to tell him. Do your best, but always be true to yourself. Thanks gentlemen! You made my day and hopefully my son’s. Ps- I’m 46 and I’ve finally decided to go to college. It’s never too late to turn down the outside noise and follow your heart🥰 🖤💫🦋
If you could ask Neil and Charles one question to get advice on, what would you ask them?
Yes wisdom or advice talk by scientists are the most underrated.
There's more encouragement from this video than any pep talk I've had in my life.
