Prime this guy is the most legendary tech speaker on earth, you must watch all his talks.
This is why it's important to distinguish between open source and free software.
Dylan has the greatest talk of them: The Art of Code
Dylan beattie and theprimeagen in one video 😮🤯
Dylan is a freaking legend! His talks "Art of Coding" and "Email vs Capitalism" are among the most influential talks I've been exposed to within "The Economics of Programming Languages" by Evan Czaplicki. So happy to see him on Prime reactions, Cheers!
Open source is the thing that you dedicate maybe a couple of hours a week, while you have a 120k job. Once you think in converting that thing in a full income stream or a company, no matter what the license says, it will devolve into "we are opensource buuuuttt"
The original presenter is Dylan Beatie! He has done quite a few conference talks and he is currently doing a History of Computing in TLAs series on his youtube channel. Highly recommend checking his work out
This is why you don't sell the open source software itself. Open source tools, frameworks that power the product, whatever. But trying to sell the free product itself has never worked. IMO Rails is kind of the gold standard for how to do it: DHH made a product, open sourced the framework, others helped him improve it, so his product gets better, others can use Rails for their own products and everyone is happy.
before seeing the video: Open source w/o a customer service or other kind of service isn't a business model, as much as I love FOSS, we need to do the red hat thing, target companies for the support with open source solutions and expedite the community to maintain a "community edition" and trades patch back and forth
His Plain Text talk should be compulsory for anyone in technology. Gets to the heart of why we can’t have perfect solutions in an imperfect world.
