Have We Been Brainwashed? Quantum Mechanics and Nonlocality
Nobel Laureate Alain Aspect on Shattering Classical Intuition with Quantum Experiments
Explore the century-long experimental quest that proved Einstein wrong about reality, focusing on entanglement and non-locality. Readers will gain insight into the revolutionary implications of Aspect's Nobel-winning verification of quantum theory.
Short Summary
- Aspect confirms that foundational quantum concepts like entanglement necessitate abandoning either locality or realism.
- Early foundational breakthroughs involved Planck’s quanta, Einstein’s photon concept, and de Broglie’s matter waves.
- Bell’s theorem provided the testable framework to experimentally challenge local hidden variable theories, leading to Aspect's confirmation. This discussion charts the difficult intellectual journey from classical physics toward accepting quantum non-locality, detailing the critical experiments that validated quantum mechanics over Einstein’s expectations and exploring the impact on future quantum technologies.

This video is one of those cases where you really need to be able to give many thumbs up, not just one. It was a gem. Thank you both.
This is a marvellous interview. Here we have two great physicists, Brian Greene being an excellent interviewer, and Alain Aspect being a highly knowledgeable and deep thinker as well as brilliant experimenter, who knows how to explain the most complex aspects of quantum physics to us. Thank you, Brian Greene, and the WSF!
For me it was exciting and a great privilege to hear Alain Aspect in this conversation with Brian Greene. Dr. Aspect is a long-time hero of mine, though I'm no physicist and can only barely grasp the more-or-less popularized presentations of the non-locality problem. I certain hope that he's right about the US Constitution being "robust" enough to prevail against the current efforts to squelch scientific research and science itself.
"Things are shocking, then we get used to it." For better or worse, indeed. Another superb WSF/Brain Greene presentation.
Excellent. Thank you Brian. There are not many Aspect interviews around and not all in english.
I especially love the comments about "useful" calculations that help or support "intuition" for further study.. It really brings in the human aspect of development and testing, which is what science is based on.
Wow! Thank you everyone who contributed to this interview.
My brain is on spin cycle but I can’t find the off button!
I like that "everyone's a realist eventually" take. Aka eventually people will intuitionalize anything. It's a refreshing idea.
'I am an optimistic person" was something I needed to hear today.
