The issue is that SEO is a moving target with each new Google algorithm update. It requires much more work to be successful in 2026.
Adapting to what exactly? Recently. And there's no solid ground to build on.
CTR is dropping dramatically, and I can see this clearly across the websites I manage. Half of the internet used to be built around informational content, and that part is now becoming almost meaningless. So the logical move is to focus more on commercial-intent keywords like "reviews", "cost", and similar searches. But even those are increasingly being swallowed by AI Overviews. As for LLM visibility, I’m not even sure who actually clicks on the sources they cite. And unless your business fits neatly into a “best product/service” type of query, I’m not convinced appearing there has much value either. So there is a lot of lost traffic out there. We are all trying to understand where it has gone and where it will move next — but the reality is that AI has absorbed a huge part of that traffic and, in many cases, simply made it disappear.
Here's my two cents: Despite the downward trend, SEO is still the backbone behind most results in the "AI SEO" space. AI platforms are an important part of my SEO campaigns. However, I still believe that creating high-quality content and building quality links are tasks best handled by humans. AI tools can streamline the process significantly, but I don't think they can take you all the way to achieving meaningful results on their own. That's just based on my experience, it may have worked differently for others. That said, you should absolutely pay attention to the recent changes happening in the industry. Whether someone calls it "GEO," "AI SEO," or something else entirely, our job remains the same: to generate leads and drive sales for our clients. As long as we're accomplishing that, I'd say we're doing our job well.
"SEO has died thousands of times" is basically the truth here. If you adapt, you can do great. Unsurprisingly, if you just complain about it, you're not going to get very far.
are backlinks still important
AEO - SEO - GEO... but the existence of these terms is different from the existence of any real meaning or distinction between the words. Is there a difference in meaning, or is it simply a matter of renaming and manipulating terminology?

I can offer them AEO and GEO, as clients ask for it but I am explaining them that it is less than 1% of the search and still it is too early to spend a lot of money on it. More so if they invest enough in SEO they will have good AEO and Geo results.
