I feel sorry for the people who didn't live through this when it came out. The found footage thing was fresh and people thought it was real.
H.P. Lovecraft "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown".
This came out at _the_ perfect time. I miss when word of mouth was just as powerful as the early internet.
$60,000 budget, $270,000,000 in box office revenue
You never saw the horsehair lady, you never saw a witch. The darkness was all filled in by your imagination. That's what makes it so scary.
7:59 the little kid trying to keep Mom from talking about it was just too good.

The film is implying that the witch or something else is mimicking Josh's voice. It also implies that Josh is probably dead because of the teeth and tongue in that bundle of sticks. Josh wouldn't be able to speak or shout without a tongue.
"I just feel dread in every cell." Yes.
I love that you're seeing that horror movies aren't just about blood and gore or cheap jump scares, it's about the human condition, our flaws, our worst fears (and new ones!), and often just a different perspective of realities we take for granted.
