I'll believe it when OpenAI fires all their coders. It is impressive what AI can do, and it keeps getting better. I think it still needs a software engineer to guide it when you are working with real projects. Next maybe it will just need a project manager to guide it. And after that, maybe it will just need a CEO. It's the next step after that where we humans really are in trouble.

You make a few valid points, although the timeline looks doubtful. Thanks for posting Open AI revenue projections over the next 3-5 years, would be fun to revisit them in 3-5 year time...

I worked at Boeing in change management. We made documents. - big paper documents - that were delivered with the airplane. A pallet of boxes with drawings, specifications, standards, and change management documentation for every single part - even fasteners. The typists pool had been declining since about 1993. I don't think any of them remained after 1998. The very same thing is happening with people who manipulate text or sets of instructions (code). The survivors are the ones who can find something meaningful to do using AI in a related space. The winners will team with AI to be the most valuable coders.

Given that AI coding will eclipse humans, what becomes valuable is imagination. It’ll still be nerds creating the cutting edge apps though - big-picture thinkers with very precise language skills, possibly even poetic. I expect that some language styles will work better than others in terms of effective prompts. I certainly found that when I dived into DALL-E. Trying to get what I wanted by piecemeal description was frustrating and produced rubbish. Expressing an idea poetically, with a few relevant specifics, opened it up completely. It shocked me how accurately my ideas were imaged when my prompts were written in the style of an imagistic poem I may write. This may seem tangential or irrelevant, but I think it may be quite significant. I found the same thing with coding. I’m developing an audio processor on a cluster of micros, and I’m finding that it’s possible to generate variations of my system in one prompt, which means that I’m now focused on how to finesse prompting. And that is a very particular kind of skill, which seems to be sharpened by interacting with AI often and in various modalities - coding, graphics, writing (technical, tutorial, literary …) and interacting with Wolfram to design objects and solve problems. The subtleties of AI-whispering. I’m certain it’s a thing. So, you’re task is clear - more daydreaming to encourage imagination, and learn to write poetry.

Interesting, an Audio-Technical ad popped up on my screen when you mentioned them! It went away after an minute or two

What a breaking news. I haven't read about it today yet.

I think 2026 will be the year of vision specifically really understanding what it's seeing.
