Unlearning Japanese Pronunciation Basics

Master essential (but often misunderstood) Japanese sounds, including R/L distinctions, pitch accents, and how to correctly pronounce common sentence endings like 'Desu'.

Short Summary

  • Demystify the Japanese equivalents for the English 'R' and 'L' sounds, which usually map toward a 'D' or soft mixture sound.
  • Learn critical prosodic elements like double consonants and pitch accents that fundamentally change word meaning. This episode breaks down core initial hurdles in Japanese pronunciation by reviewing techniques for tongue placement, sound lengths, and specific phonetic variations. It serves as a quick guide for learners struggling with common phonetic traps.

We demand a Real Real English special episode, where the roles are reversed. I need to hear Cameron's struggle and Sugi's fluency. Need to have him demand answers for things like "buffalo buffalo buffalo" or "to, two, too or tow and toe, or bow and bow, etc. Let's hear some english tongue twisters that amuse Sugi

As a linguist, this is so interesting to watch. They're trying to describe that the Japanese R sound is an alveolar tap. That's to tap the tongue to the little flesh bump behind your teeth, before the roof of your mouth. A Spanish (or any non-French Latin based language) R is similar (as a tap), but on the roof of your mouth. They're wrong about the English R, which doesn't actually touch any part of your mouth. That's why it's such a hard consonant to teach or learn. The English L can actually have the tongue touch most places from the back of your teeth to the roof of your mouth, but must be held in place with the sides pulled in. But great job and thank you, this is an excellent example of phonetics and phonology in practice without requiring so many complicated terms.
