The Debate Over the Age of the Universe, with Wendy Freedman
Resolving the Cosmological Crisis of the Hubble Tension
Discover why two precise methods for measuring the universe's expansion rate disagree, and learn how leading astronomers are using next-generation tools like JWST to determine if we need new physics or just better data correction.
Short Summary
- Local distance measurements yield a faster expansion rate ($H_0 \approx 73$) than predictions derived from the Cosmic Microwave Background ($H_0 \approx 67$).
- Researchers emphasize that overcoming systematic errors in astrophysical measurements, not just increasing precision, is crucial for resolving the standoff.
- The next phase of investigation relies on the James Webb Space Telescope utilizing multiple, independent "standard candle" techniques to validate the foundational distance ladder.
- This discussion traces the history of the distance debate, honoring the foundational work of Henrietta Leavitt in establishing the necessary yardsticks for modern cosmology.
Astronomer Wendy Freedman joins Neil deGrasse Tyson and Matt Kirshen to dissect the Hubble Tension, the most publicized disagreement in modern cosmology. They cover the historical context of measuring the universe's age and expansion rate, the strict difference between precision and accuracy, and the cutting-edge research aiming to identify systematic observational flaws before declaring the Standard Cosmological Model broken.

StarTalk has become my favourite podcast.
She is AWESOME. I could listen to her talk about stars forever. Thank you for bringing Wendy on. Very easy to understand and informative 👌
If solving the Hubble Tension means rewriting the laws of physics, what do you think we’ve been missing all along?
I just wanna say "Thank you!" on the behalf of all humanity. Because if you didn't struggle to keep science out of biasness or benefit of anything really (let it be country or money etc..) we couldn't have come this far. You need not to invent something or make a breakthrough for contributing science. We're grateful for all of your efforts 🙏❤ And for making us love science too ☺
Wow. YouTube is now throwing in ads something like every minute.
"The data without a theory, is not very useful"❤ love u Dr
Absolutely fabulous episode, especially the guest speaker Wendy. Really good and fast-paced discussion.
In short, the more we know, the more questions we have.
13:02 😂😂. I'm brain dead
The idea of "putting the sun out" with water or a blanket....is SILLY !!!!! Baking soda. You use baking soda.
