Aaron Alexander & Andrew Gordon sit down to review The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023), the prequel in Suzanne Collins’ blockbuster YA dystopian saga. Directed by Francis Lawrence (Catching Fire, Mockingjay) and adapted by Michael Lesslie & Michael Arndt, the film takes us 64 years before Katniss Everdeen’s time, exploring the origins of President Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth – Billy the Kid), when he’s still a mentor in Panem and seeking to restore his family's lost prestige. Tom Blyth brings a complex blend of ambition, vulnerability, and ruthless cunning to young Snow, while Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) plays Lucy Gray Baird, the charismatic tribute from District 12 whose musical roots in the Covey make her a crowd favorite—and a threat. Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) appears as Tigris Snow, Snow’s cousin and confidante, caught between family loyalty and moral conflict. Josh Andrés Rivera plays Sejanus Plinth, Snow’s friend whose empathy drives his own agonizing choices. Jason Schwartzman (The Grand Budapest Hotel) is Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman, the precursor to the flamboyant hosts of later Games, and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) anchors the story as Casca Highbottom, Dean of the Academy, haunted by the consequences of what he helped start. Viola Davis (Fences, How to Get Away with Murder) gives a powerful turn as Dr. Volumnia Gaul, the formidable Gamemaker pulling strings behind Panem’s evolving Hunger Games machine. Standout moments include Snow and Lucy Gray’s performances in reaping ceremonies, the provocative “snake pit” element in the Games, and the tension-filled scenes that show Snow’s moral decay—especially his final acts as he begins to embrace power at any cost. With lush cinematography, ethical dilemmas, and emotional character arcs, Songbirds & Snakes offers both spectacle and introspection, casting a dark light on how one young man transforms into the tyrant Panem would come to fear. #BalladOfSongbirdsAndSnakes #HungerGamesPrequel #TomBlyth #RachelZegler #ViolaDavis #Panem #YoungCoriolanus #MovieReaction #YAadaptation #ActionSciFi #YAadaptation #MovieReaction #HungerGamesFinale #SuzanneCollins #YoungAdult #YoungAdultNovel #Movie #Movies #React #ReactTo #Reaction Follow Andrew Gordon On Socials: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@MovieSource Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/agor711/?hl=en Twitter: https://twitter.com/Agor711 Follow Aaron On Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therealaaronalexander/?hl=en 0:00 Checking In! 2:23 Hunger Games Songbirds & Snakes Reaction 35:16 HUEL 36:48 Hunger Games Songbirds & Snakes Movie Reaction 1:31:36 Hunger Games 5 Review Intense Suspense by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ RR Clips & Shorts Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ReelRejectsClips Follow TheReelRejects On The Socials: IG: https://www.instagram.com/reelrejects/ TT: https://www.tiktok.com/@thereelrejects?lang=en TWITTER: https://twitter.com/thereelrejects FB: https://www.facebook.com/TheReelRejects/ Music Used In Ad: Hat the Jazz by Twin Musicom is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Happy Alley by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Head Editor: https://www.instagram.com/praperhq/?hl=en Supervising Producer: https://twitter.com/nerdchronic?lang=en Co-Editor: Greg Alba Co-Editor: John Humphrey Music In Video: Airport Lounge - Disco Ultralounge by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Follow & Listen to Us Wherever You Get Your Podcasts!! - Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3XHMwbveiznxSOGxN9XT0M - Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5tZWdhcGhvbmUuZm0vc3Rhci13YXJzLXRhbGs - Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-reel-rejects-tv-movie-recaps/id1616339990 - Audible: https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Apocalypse-Podcast/B08JJP58FG

Rachel Zegler pointed out that the difference between Lucy Gray and Katniss is that Lucy was a performer forced to fight, while Katniss was a fighter forced to perform. I think this is an incredible parallel between both of them.

I’m sure plenty of you will point this out, but after reading some trivia when we got home, Aaron and I realized that Tigris: Snow’s cousin actually appeared in the previous film: Mockingjay Part 2 as well. Can’t believe we missed that one! I guess the odds weren’t in our favor this time. May they be ever in yours!

In a country called Panem, there is a capitol surrounded by 13 districts. The capitol is not one of the districts; it is the capital.

I also understand that Andrew, despite not being in the best time of his life, finds the strength to watch films and share his thoughts and impressions with us. It's amazing. Thanks, man.

1:08:44 Not only did Lucy Gray //also sing// the hanging tree song — she wrote it! It’s about THE hanging we witnessed only a few minutes before this scene. The line ”where dead man called out for his love to flee” is about the jabberjays echoing his screams even after he was dead. I couldn’t find any other comments about this, so I thought I should share it. Suzanne Collins is such a brilliant writer, who ties everything together in the most heartbreaking way possible!

His inner monologue in the books shows he's the elder Snow you love to dislike. He didn't necessarily love her although he didn't hate her. But she's still "district."

I think the biggest thing this movie suffers from is not being able to hear the internal thoughts of the characters. In the books all of Snow's actions are shown to be carefully calculated and thought out to present him as charming and likeable like when he rushed to help his fellow student in the cage and make Lucy Gray look more than just some nobody from District 12 but in the movie it just looks like he's a nice guy

Hunter Schaffer did such a good job with this role. It's a minor part, but you can really see Snow's fall from the perspective of someone who understands the entire story. It is so telling the Tigress spent her adulthood opposing her cousin.

The end of the book explains more- Sejanus’s parents pay for everything he needs for university and even buy the building where his families apartment had lived so they can go back. He studies directly under Gaul, was in a special honors class in military strategy taught by her. He became an interns gamemaker and it was him who came up with the ideas for victors receiving a monetary prize and food for their entire district, victors village, mandatory viewership of games, and the victor tour. Dr Gaul was also the instructor that gave the assignment to Dean Highbottom and Snow’s father that they created the games for.
