Freedom of the press is only as valuable as the media's willingness to report facts as opposed to their personal bias.
If Alex Murdaugh received a fair trial in his own district, I don’t know how they can gag this trial.
The Shepard case was a total nightmare of the press running wild and a judiciary doing nothing but making it worse. The press publishing addresses and photos of the jury is just so outside of the normal scope that it was and still remains shocking to me. Questioning a suspect for hours without them having their lawyer present and in front of the public is so shocking that I’m amazed the trial actually went forward. It wouldn’t today.
As a 66 year old woman, I can tell you I remember reading articles in life magazine even as a child I would love to hear a deep dive on this one. It’s very reflective of the 60s.
I feel the courts argument fails given that there have been several high profile, highly publicized jury trials recently. In all of them it’s abundantly clear that although the press has had access the defendants rights have been recognized. The one the really stands out to me the most at the moment is the L Stauch trial.

I believe the gag order should be thrown out!! We do have a constitution!
I want to know the details but I can wait. I want him to get a fair trial so that the families might not have to go through this more than once.
My question is what makes one case more high profile than another case there’s been a lot of cases where people have done mass killings they didn’t even hit the news, except for local or statewide 26:14 26:18
Right to a fair trial & impartial jury supercedes public's right to know/watch
