Fascism is a lot closer to communism than anything, it's a form of socialism that rather than being class-based is nationality-based. Communists want a global socialism for those born into lower classes. Fascists want a nation-wide socialism for people of their own country. This is also why fascists and nazis are distinct and not entirely the same, nazis want a racial socialism, as in germany as a race, which is tied to a 'greater reich' Fascism comes from the italian fascio party, which basically means 'bundle' and came straight from the unions of italy. Many historians are ignorantly confused over Mussolini being socialist in his youth and then suddenly becoming a right wing fascist, and the reason they're confused is because they're already coming to conclusions about what a fascist is from a false premise. He did not suddenly radically switch from socialism. He took socialism to a national extreme. Just as the nazis did, the key difference here is that the fascists were not concerned with your race or your ethnic purity, only that you are italian. Make no mistake, both achieve their aims by taking freedoms and consolidating government power, acknowledging their differences doesn't make any of them better than the others That's a long way of saying that fascism IS socialism just a bit distinct in implimentation from other arms of socialism, and is far less accurate of a term when aimed at right wingers than left, who typically want stronger centralised government powers and economic control.. as all socialists do. Fascists were the Italian expression of socialism taken to the extreme. One area of difference between fascist / nazi ideology and soviet / Marxist ideas I do want to highlight is cultural identity. Fascism and Nazism both want to create a unified socialist society based upon shared history and cultural icons, the Italians with the romantic depiction of Roman heritage and the Germans with supposed Aryan dominance in history. Indeed, Germany warped science and archaeology to try to root their ideas in the natural world. Contrary to that is the soviet view, that the old needs to be erased and is the root of their problems, they create their unity through the rejection of the traditional. Of course, modern liberalism is much more geared to the rejection of their cultural icons. I would say most socialists today would rather rip down statues than herald them as heroes. These are different views on how to achieve the same goal, however. Hitler himself wrote in his book that he believed the russian revolution and victory of the red army was due to class pressures imposed by Jewish capitalists with the express intent to cause a violent uprising that would suppress native identity, so to Hitler the Soviets weren't the true socialists they were pawns in the greater Jewish game to undermine societies. And to the communists Hitler was no real socialist as his socialism was a selective sort with an emphasis on race over class. As rational beings we all know race and class can and does intersect, and that often times fascism, Nazis and Marxism all overlap and bleed into each other, because they are simply drawing different lines along the same kind of division they want to make. My point with this comment is simply to highlight that yes, modern socialists ARE flirting with the same ideas and tactics as the fascists, and they are indeed all just different flavours of socialist, even if some would be more like the Soviets than the Nazis or fascists. They are all still shades of red. Any socialism taken to the logical conclusion of their ideology will look like fascism or nazism or marxism in some capacity, don't let the radical left avoid the fact that all the evil ideological forces of the 20th century came from their ideas
