Trump Created the Rage—and Now It’s Aimed at Him (w/ Chris Hayes) | The Bulwark Podcast
Analyzing Populist Energy Shifts, Factional Cracks on the Right, and Political Strategy Testing
Examine the shift of anti-establishment energy as Donald Trump becomes entrenched, observe how structural political realities affect Democratic messaging, and review critical breakdowns occurring within conservative media ecosystems.
Short Summary
- Assess why the Democratic party has significant leverage against the Republican Party regarding the government shutdown fallout.
- Understand why the filibuster is viewed as a self-neutering mechanism that empowers the executive branch.
- Note the ideological fracturing on the right, where low-trust populists are now skeptical of Trump’s ties to tech and the security state.
- Evaluate how recent election results test theories on how to reach modern, disengaged or algorithmically influenced voters.
This discussion between Tim Miller and Chris Hayes reviews the ramifications of the recent government shutdown fight, focusing on why Democratic politicians felt compelled to opt out of a protracted conflict over Obamacare subsidies. They analyze the role of the filibuster in concentrating power in the White House and discuss recent electoral data—particularly in Virginia—which challenges prevailing theories about attention-based campaigning, especially for presidential cycles. Finally, the conversation pivots to worrying trends involving rising antisemitism within specific right-wing media factions.

The federal government has shrunk to 4 people: POTUS, Spkr, Leader, Chief Justice. NOT A REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY.
I'm an independent who worked for the US government for decades. Most of those times I was considered essential and worked without pay during shutdowns. I was OK with it, if it was worth the sacrifice. The thing is everyone is not me and is not making the same sacrifice or feeling the same level of pain. So while i believe that this was always the likely outcome of the shutdown, I still empathize and understand why others feel differently. Please everyone in the pro democracy movement, keep fighting despite your disappoint in this moment. The fight is our sacrifice for future generations.
I’m dirt poor without my snap right now. I don’t care I wanted to hold out. I wanted to take it a lot further. Shut down the airports and just stop shopping. I was all in. Let’s make homemade gifts for Christmas.
Really fun to hear Chris Hayes unconstrained by the parameters of his show.
If someone says MS, I assume they are speaking about multiple sclerosis.
Democrats have to govern even when Republicans are in power! Democrats it's not about policy anymore it's about power, trump is destroying America and it's institutions!
Chris and Tim should do a weekly show.
We had better remember that the Supreme Court is working against democracy
Yes Chris! Too many Dems, including Schumer and Jefferies, are acting like it’s the 90s
