Rick Hanson is like the caring father figure I wish I had. I can't overstate how much him and his son's podcast, Being Well, has helped me.
"We can be just as affected by the lack of the good as the presence of the bad." What a line. That one really hit home for me.
37:50 I've read a lot of self-help books, and the main summary is to treat yourself the way other people should have treated you. Check in on yourself and give yourself encouragement, don't beat yourself up, do it every day for short periods.
You can teach me all the biases, frameworks, logic and knowledge you want, but new things are complex, inefficient and difficult to incorporate and when I don't set myself up correctly, my very well trained and efficient (but faulty) instinct/monkey brain gets to pick first. I recently found out about the 85% rule: basically, slowing down everything you do to 85% of previous --> talk slower, gesture slower, literally take a second or 2 longer to let a feeling sink in better/deeper or a thought to form clearer, think/read/type/piss/eat slower etc and keep yourself on 85% even when you get excited or angry. Im happier, more energetic, less distracted, higher performing and weirdly enough faster than ever.
