After going above and beyond for my company, getting positive yearly reviews and asking how i can grow in my company, i still was told no or barely give 1% increase. So then i decided i only do the work required of me for the job and pay that reflects it. I’m not going above and beyond for a company that refuses to recognize me and providing for their employees with fair compensation
My key takeaways from this podcast: When asked: “Tell me something about yourself” Respond with: “Im going to share 2 things about my professional experience and 2 things about my personal life” Think about things that will make you stand out, be different, of value while staying true to yourself. Anxiety Feeling anxious > means you care Recipe for Anxiety: Uncertainty + Lack of Control which are 2 things that are present in every conversation. REFRAME for Anxiety: Take advantage of the high energy of anxiety and move from it/transition from anxiety to excitement. 1. Focus on how it could go well (visualize) instead of how it could go wrong. 2. The only control we have is how we think about something. Think about what other people need and deliver it to them. After an interview or process always express gratitude. “Don’t aim for perfection, aim for connection” hope it helps someone!
I just had a revelation! As a woman/wife/mom, I do things without the need for recognition. If something needs to be done, I just do it. But my husband, when he does something even the smallest thing, he makes sure I know that he did it. It’s annoying. But now I’m realizing that maybe men have gotten ahead in their careers because they do this more than women do. It’s still annoying because it doesn’t come to me naturally to do this.
This goes against most peoples' experience. You give and give and give, never say "no" to anything your boss asks of you, and over and over you see others promoted over you. It's actually the ones who leave early to hit happy hour with their bosses, who socializes with them on the weekends, who get promoted. I've actually been told I didn't get a promotion I applied for because I was too valuable to her in the lower role I currently held.
No matter what you do you will always be replaceable, I'm not being pessimistic, I'm being realistic, always do your best no matter what, the world is full of possibilities
I start this conversation in the interview..."if you hire me and it's a year down the road, what would I need to have done or contributed to have you feel it was a great decision to add me to the team.
The problem about being irreplaceable is that it often entails killing oneself with overtime and over-exertion/burnout. We want a balance, where our wellbeing is also considered.
Only way for pay rise is to leave the company and move to new job with higher pay. You can only negotiate the pay during joining a new job. Staying in the same place simply does not work based on 30 years experience. In my 3rd job, I had 100% pay rise.
I don't think I'm fully convinced of her negotiating tactics, but I can see why having a wider perspective on the situation could be more helpful in succeeding a raise.
This doesn't work if your manager is clueless and gives you no response when you ask what more they need to see from you
