I can't tell you how wonderful it is to have all the accompanying imagery of referenced texts, authors, and other figures placed alongside during the conversation. In other long form podcasts, I look for this, and my joy is drained due to their absence. Whomever is editing this and adding them in, thank you.

You should interview former Taiwan President Tsai Ying-Wen, who is super free to talk now that she's out of office.

One issue not mentioned about the problem with universities--too many companies requiring a degree to qualify for a job that does not need a degree.

I'm from Switzerland, and our direct democracy works incredibly well. It gives people a real voice in decision-making, which is something many other countries admire. It's not perfect, but it's definitely one of the reasons Switzerland stands out in Europe.

This is the kind of people taking over the country from wikipedia "In 2022, Andreessen advocated against the construction of 131 multifamily housing units in their affluent Atherton, California town.In a letter, Andreessen and his wife wrote that they opposed permitting more than one house on a single acre of land. Andreessen's comments sparked criticisms of hypocrisy, as he had previously argued for increased housing supply, in particular in California."

I scratched my head when Andreessen said all the other country's GDP is going down or stagnating while being shown graphs of them all essentially increasing, not too different from America's graph.

I listened to this entire interview and my reactions spanned from "He makes some good points" to incredulity, particularly when Marc suggests that the only way to change universities is to destroy them. I have a Ph.D. from a research institution, almost 20 years experience working in the fortune 500 in R&D and now 5 years teaching full time at a community college. I was a lower middle class American kid who has done well because of the higher education system. You can absolutely change the culture at an institution with administrative changes. If administration wants certain faculty to leave, they can cut departmental funds. For example, in the late 90's the University of Rochester's president made the terrible mistake of cutting funding for Ph.D. students in specific departments (including one in engineering). Within 5 years, most of the faculty had left because they couldn't do their research work without Ph.D. students. It completely reshaped the departments that were cut. The same thing can happen at companies when there are real management shake-ups. He also seems to overlook the reliance of industry on academic R&D. Probably 99% of the literature I read while in corporate R&D was generated at universities or government labs. These institutions are the ones that can spend the time and resources to do fundamental research that companies won't do because they can't see a payback within 2 to 5 years. Marc Andreesen and his companies benefitted from the system and now that "he got his" he wants to shut out everyone else. What a petty little man.
