Description

Can you still build muscle after 60? Dr. Brad Schoenfeld (Professor of Exercise Science at Lehman College) joins us to explain the biological reality of Anabolic Resistance and the specific Leucine Threshold required to overcome it. While many influencers push endless supplements, Brad cuts through the noise, identifying Creatine Monohydrate as the primary evidence-backed tool for maintaining muscle architecture and strength as we age. In this clip, Dr Brad Schoenfeld, one of the world's leading muscle researchers, explains why older adults need more protein than general guidelines suggest, what the leucine threshold is and why it matters, and how to think about protein distribution across the day. He also gives his frank assessment of supplements for muscle building and cuts through most of them quickly. The one exception is creatine monohydrate, which he discusses in detail: how it works, who responds to it, who doesn't, and why vegans and plant-based eaters may see the biggest benefit. He also touches on the emerging research around creatine and brain health and is careful to flag how early that evidence still is. A practical, no-nonsense breakdown from someone who has spent decades studying this. *Key Scientific Concepts Discussed* Anabolic Resistance: The age-related decrease in the muscle’s response to protein intake. The Leucine Threshold: The biochemical "trigger" required to initiate muscle protein synthesis (MPS). Spot on Dr. Schoenfeld. creatine is different because you'd have to eat a ton of red meat to get a meaningful does, but apart from that, supplements should be precisely that - supplements! Why buy separate vitamins and minerals UNLESS you live in some urban food desert where you can't find a bag of carrots or a sack of salad without a long drive out?
